Preparing Your Car for a Long Distance Drive

There are times when you need to visit a certain person or attend a certain event another state. The distance between you and your destination may be several hundred miles away. To save money, you choose to drive rather than fly. Driving long distances requires that your car should be in its best condition. Remember that the vehicle will undergo a nonstop and extended operation of its engine, tyres, and other parts. Thus you need to carefully prepare your automobile before a long drive.

First, drive to the nearest auto shop, and have your car thoroughly checked. A full tune-up is best, but in case this is impractical for some reason, make sure you have your oil changed. Fresh oil ensures that your engine runs smoothly.

Next, have your brakes checked to ensure proper functioning. Replace the pads and brake fluid if necessary. Working brakes are vital for your safety. Remember, you may need to stop suddenly while speeding on a long stretch of road.

Make sure your tyre is inflated at the right pressure. Driving at high speed for a long period of time wears out the tyres much more quickly if they are under- or overinflated, sometimes causing them to explode suddenly. In addition, proper pressure reduces fuel consumption considerably.

If you are expecting to drive during the night, check your headlamps and taillights to make sure they are working properly. You may need to have your lights aligned properly.

Finally, no matter how well you prepare for the trip, you will never guess what will happen to your car on the road. Thus, you need to bring emergency supplies such as extra fuel, spare parts, a jumper cable, flares, a tool kit, and the like.
