Seattle Slew died on May 7, 2002 at the age of 28. One of only 11 winners of horse racing’s prestigious ‘Triple Crown’ he is by default considered among the all time greats in thoroughbred racing. Of the eleven horses to win the Triple Crown, he is the only one to do so with an undefeated record. He was also notable due to his humble beginnings, and is the only Triple Crown winner to have been purchased at public auction. He retired to stud in’78 and sired over 100 stakes race winners including’84 Kentucky Derby champion, Swale. Slew’s offspring have earned a combined $76 million dollars at the race track. Slew wasn’t the most majestic looking creature by the lofty standards of race horses, but was possessed with the heart, toughness and courage of a professional prizefighter.

The Seattle Slew story started at a public auction in Kentucky–not exactly a venue expected to produce a future champion. Slew, in particular, was an unlikely heir to greatness. He was somewhat clumsy looking due to a front right forefoot splay and had a shuffling gait at trot. Slew wasn’t a beautifully majestic creature like his Triple Crown winning predecessor, Secretariat. In fact, he could have been considered borderline ugly–to the extent that he was nicknamed ‘Baby Huey’ by the Keeneland staff. What wasn’t apparent at the time was Slew’s mixture of championship intangibles–competitive desire, toughness, heart and enthusiasm. His owners had unwittingly stumbled onto an equine Muhammad Ali, and his competitive fire quickly became apparent to his trainers and jockeys. His first race came at Belmont Park in’76, and he entered–and won–three races as a two year old giving a glimpse as to what like ahead.

Slew became the Kentucky Derby favorite by winning his three prep races as a three year old, including prestigious Wood Memorial. In the Derby, Slew got off to a terrible start as he stumbled from the gate much like War Emblem did in the 2002 Belmont. Unlike 2002’s Triple Crown contender, however, Slew was able to recover from that miscue and basically force his way through a pack of other horses to position himself at the front of the field at the quarter mile pole. Slew would win the Derby by a length and 3 quarters. He took another tough victory at the Preakness before clinching the Triple Crown with a 4 length victory in the Belmont Stakes.

Slew ran in a few races as a 4 year old but in the pre-Breeders’ Cup days there wasn’t as many opportunities for an older horse. He retired to stud in’78. We’ve already discussed his prowess in the breeding shed, siring a number of first rate horses such as the aforementioned Swale, and the’92 Belmont champ AP Indy. Slew stood at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky from’85 until early 2002 when he was moved to Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Lexington, KY following a spinal operation.

Slew may not have earned the appreciation he deserved in his prime, coming so closely on the heels of the charismatic’73 Triple Crown winner Secretariat–arguably the greatest thoroughbred race horse in history. The jockeys that rode him, however, understood fully what a special animal they were dealing with. Jockey Angel Cordero gave Seattle Slew this lofty praise: “If I had a chance to take any horse in the world, if someone said your life is depending on riding one horse to win, I would take (Slew). I rode 44,000 horses, but he was special, he was different. He was muscled, like a wrestler. He ran different than any other horse. It was like he came from another planet.”

Following his death in 2002, Slew was laid to rest at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Kentucky under a statue memorializing his legacy.

Life keeps going, even with all the fears and worries we have to deal with, there’s no finish line, no easy, climactic ending for anyone.

The show was a revolution for fictional television, which had been growing stale in light of the unpredictability and realism of reality TV. So David Chase came up with a concept that would mix that with the stronger storytelling of fictional shows. The end result led to similar shows like LOST and House M. D., which put real characters into the show in place of the cliche, stock characters of the wacky neighbors and best friends.

Don’t go nuts trying to make sense of everything. The show is full of unanswered questions, and just as in life, you’ll never figure it all out.

If there’s a moral to the story that The Sopranos tells, it’s this: Life is hard to figure out, but tomorrow’s another day. It’s really interesting that, while the specifics may be different, you will see your own life reflected in Tony’s more so than you will in most movies or shows where the lead characters have more conventional jobs. Coppola is a truly unique director in several ways. Perhaps the one thing that really defines him is that he is NOT defined by his gimmicks. When you watch a film by Martin Scorsese, he may surprise you, but you know that you’re going to get some exotic camera movements, some fast paced editing and, if it’s set in modern times, “Gimme Shelter” by the Rolling Stones will play at least once. Apocalypse Now defines Coppola’s unpredictability.

The film is said to be based on the novel Heart of Darkness, and while there are some parallels, it’s really nothing like a direct adaptation. The film follows Martin Sheen as Captain Benjamin J. Willard, a veteran secret operatives specialist who, after his last tour of duty, has apparently taken to heavy drinking and grown psychotic in the meantime.

The only thing he wants is to be put back into action, thriving on the blood lust and having no other purpose in life than to fight. He rots away in his room as choppers fly over head, going stir crazy while awaiting the next assignment.

The famous shot of Sheen punching the mirror was not scripted. He really went that crazy. The film is full of scenes and moments that were not scripted, and not just because of Coppola’s open attitude towards improvisation. The making of feature on this film is just about as wild and as fascinating as the movie itself, but we’ve only got time to review one or the other for now…

From the first scene to the last, the movie is full of fascinating characters and cameos. We see Harrison Ford in the mission briefing scene playing a one-conversation character, and then we meet Cockroach, a character who never speaks, but rather, sleeps through most of his scene, fires a grenade, and goes back to sleep, while remaining the most gripping character in the scene. We have Robert Duvall as Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore, and…

This is without even mentioning any of the main characters. You could remove Kilgore, Dennis Hopper or Cockroach and still tell this story. Marlon Brando as Colonel Kurtz is, in fact, the heart of the film, despite not even appearing until the final act of the story. Even without appearing on screen until the finale, his existence casts a nihilistic dread across the atmosphere of the movie.

The film succeeds on every possible level. It is endearing, at times, when you see the camaraderie between the men on Willard’s boat. It’s funny, it’s exciting with some of the greatest action set pieces ever put to film, it’s a jaw dropping piece of cinematic art, yet… The pessimism, the nihilism of the two main characters, Willard and Kurtz, eventually takes over and overwhelms every other aspect of the film.

While Coppola claims Rumble Fish as the personal favorite amongst his body of work, his fans typically consider it to be between Apocalypse Now and The Godfather Part II. It is, at the very least, his most wild, insane and epic film to date.

When legendary quarterback Brett Favre announced his return to the NFL from what has become a seemingly annual flirtation with retirement, many second guessed the Minnesota Vikings’ decision to sign “The Gunslinger”. On Sunday, Favre and the Vikings answered those critics in the best way possible-with a lopsided 34-3 beatdown of the Dallas Cowboys. Favre threw 4 touchdown passes in the victory and the Vikings’ defense sacked Dallas QB Tony Romo six times in the blowout.

NFL football betting fans also cashed tickets on the Vikings as -3 point home favorites. Between the laughs, cries, ups, and downs of this film, you will find your heard warmed in a matter of two hours! The popularity for this post-apocalyptic robot has increasing, and increased fast!

Best Picture Award is up for grabs to this motion picture film at the Oscars. What a big deal this would be! It would be the very first animated film that won Best Picture. This movie represents the extend people, and even inanimate objects go to keep friendship alive. Imagine the intensity that must be put into this process in creating animated characters expressing friendship and love. In order for the viewers to “believe” what is going on, the director must analyze each movement made.

Small in size but big at heart, Wall-E embarks on a journey that could change destiny forever. This trip could could change the fate of robots and mankind. This small robot has no idea that what he will find in outer space could take over the entire world. The reason Wall-E left his normal lifestyle is because he met another robot, Eve. Eve stole his heart immediately, and when she left for the distant future, Wall-E followed along like a little puppy.

Wall-E is designed to clean up a waste-covered earth. This job might be the greatest thing that has ever happened to little wall-e because it leads him to Eve, which leads him to the future. Although he comes in counter with something that was not pre-thought, his instinct is to fix it.

Once arrived to the future, Wall-E is engrossed with Eve. He doesn’t know where he is, or what’s going on their. Things slowly start to unveil. Wall-E realizes that the jeopardy of humanity is at hand. I will not share the ending of this movie. You will have to find out yourself, by watching it!

In a short duration, I will discuss a couple o the cast members that play a role in this movie. Successful Ben Burtt voices two characters in the movie, Wall-E and MO. Ben is very productive in american sound designing. He was involved in many world phenomenon movies including Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and Star Wars.

The costar who voices Eve is Elissa Knight. This actress has played in many other animated movies including Lil aka “3″ in Toy Story 3, Tia in Cars, and a woman in the restaurant in Ratatouille. Other character’s voices in Wall-E areJohn Ratzenberger who voices John, Fred Willard who voices Shelby Forthright – BnL CEO, and Kathy Najimy who voices Mary.

One of my favorite films in recent years was American Beauty. This movie was highly acclaimed, winning five Academy Awards. These included best picture and Kevin Spacey winning Best Actor.

The story line is about a family in turmoil with everyone struggling with who they are. It is a small family consisting of a couple and their lone child, a teenage daughter. The movie chronicles their battles with each other and themselves.

Kevin Spacey plays the father Lester, and he is going through a mid-life crisis. He hates his job, his family hates him, and he is simply bored with life. His wife Carolyn is always criticizing him, and his teenage daughter Jane is rebelling against her parents. She is disgusted by how they behave.

Carolyn, who is quite the bitch, is straying from the marriage and is dissatisfied with Lester in every way. She has her own career in real estate and is a very materialistic and career driven woman. She is having an affair with a successful and married real estate man who promises to help her with her career.

Jane is the rebellious teenager who is searching for her own identity. Her best friend is one of the high school beauties who is really a phony. Her beauty intimidates Jane, who feels like no one will ever love her.

Lester finally cracks and quits his job. He makes a good severance deal for himself and to keep busy takes a job at the local fast food establishment. He starts smoking pot and getting back into physical shape. He has a thing for Jane’s friend Angela, but at the moment of truth decides not to pursue her.

Jane meets a boy she likes. Ricky is new in the neighborhood and has his own family problems, but he and Jane find they are falling in love. Ricky is also becoming friends with Lester because he is selling dope to him.

This sets the stage for a powerful ending, which I won’t spoil for anyone who hasn’t seen the film. This is a brilliant film and Kevin Spacey is at his ultimate best. American Beauty is a must see movie.
