I will never forget when they opened the first Play Land Arcade in my hometown. Looking back, it was little more than an abandoned laundry mat that someone had gutted so they could make room for a dozen or so games and line them up against the back wall. We did not care that the drop ceiling was covered in water stains and that only half of the fluorescent lights worked.
I still remember that the owner of the games arcade had a scary resemblance to trolls I have seen in story books. He used to sit swilling beer in his little closet of an office while watching television on his little black and white model. We were fine as long as our coins were not getting stuck in the machines and there wasn’t any problems getting coins from the bill changer. It was our goal to disturb the beast in his lair only if there was absolutely no other option as he scared us senseless.
if it was necessary to ask for help our biggest problem presented itself when he opened the little door on the front of the machines where the coins are held. His belt could only support that much when he bent over and the result was the exposing of a certain part of anatomy no one wanted to see. It is just so difficult getting some of these images out of your head. They linger forever.
Despite those horrific images games like Galaga, Centipede and Donkey Kong are forever etched in my memories. I am not saying that they were the best video games ever, but they do represent a much simpler time in my life. If you ask most gamers they would probably say that modern arcades have improved the experience for everyone, but I would have to respectfully disagree with this.
In my opinion the new games over stimulate you visually and you don’t appreciate the value of a classic 2D game where a little basic hand eye coordination and imagination was needed. I don’t think anyone really needs the tickets, tokens or any of the junk crammed into those glass showcases. Just give me a monochrome monolith like those in the old arcades and an hand full of quarters. Bliss in my opinion.

Lyon Nips Real Madrid In Champions League Play
No comments · Posted by Ross Everett in Recreation & Sports
Jean Makoun scored early in the second half to give Lyon a hard fought 1-0 victory in the first leg of their round of 16 Champions League matchup against Real Madrid. The Spanish champions lost for the third straight time on Lyon’s Stade Gerland home field and will now have an uphill battle when the teams meet at Bernabeu to advance to the next round. With the Champions League final slated to be held in their stadium, an exit this early in the competition would be nothing short of an embarrassment for Real Madrid. They’ll need a multigoal victory to assure themselves of advancing to the next round.
Lyon controlled the play in the first half and held a decisive possession advantage. Unfortunately, they didn’t get many accurate scoring chances with a number of them going wide or high of the net. Despite Lyon’s time of possession advantage in the first half, Madrid actually got the best scoring chances in the first half. Following Makoun’s goal just 2 minutes from the start of the second half, Madrid controlled play but could not score the equalizer. For the game, Madrid held a 66% to 34% time of possession advantage. The shots on goal were even, but Madrid had the better chances despite not scoring on them.
Real Madrid has won the Champions League title 10 times, but now must rally from this 1-0 deficit when play resumes on their home field in May. Despite their tradition of success, Madrid hasn’t made it past the round of 16 for six straight years. Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t particularly worried heading into the home half of the matchup:
“In football anything is possible. We’ve lost here but we have a game at home in which we can repeat what they did here. I’m calm. In this competition you have to suffer. I’m sure that we will give a good answer in the return game and that we will win. The Bernabeu will help us. We will have to give to give it everything from the first minute until the last. The tie is not lost.”
Madrid General Director Jorge Valdano added:
“It’s been a bad night in general, especially the result. We had ups and downs during the match, but at no moment were we ourselves. The result means we have to really concentrate at the Bernabeu. Lyon barely stepped out of their half in the final minutes, but they made things very difficult for us for a long time, especially in midfield.”
Real Madrid will have to do without a couple of starters in the rematch. Marcelo and Xabi Alonso are suspending for the May contest due to bookings in previous contests.

The Motivation Surrounding Why People Love Slots
No comments · Posted by Simon M Skinner in Recreation & Sports
It is believed that gambling has been in existence since the days of the caveman with one person betting the other if they could be the first one to bring down something for the cooking pot. It is a form of competition; trying to see if one can outdo the other. In a sense it is the same with gambling in casinos using slot machines. Trying to beat the house (actually the machine) and sometimes succeeding is Why People Love Slots.
In the United States when Indians started building casinos on their land an entirely new avenue of gambling came on the scene. They found that this was a very good way to bring needed money to their tribes and they have been very successful. With their own type of government they are able to keep strict rules in place regarding their casinos.
In the United States, many years ago, Reno, Nevada was the top gambling city in the United States. These establishments were banned in most states. Today every state has some type of casino and collects a great deal of money in taxes. The modern casino has many enticements to lure gamblers to their premises, such as theaters, stores, first class hotel rooms, and many more.
Slot machines started out at one or five cents per play. Over time they have become very sophisticated. The penny machine, for example, now is arranged to cost as much as fifty cents per play. The nickel machine can take up to a dollar a play. Then there are dollar machines and five dollar machines, each providing the opportunity to play more than the original bet. Often times people will say they are only playing a nickel machine, for example, when they are really putting in five nickels at a time.
It is easy to become entranced with the possibility of increasing one’s initial investment or ‘hitting it big’ simply by pushing a button. Brilliant, flashing lights stating how many thousands of dollars it is possible to win draw the gamblers’ attention and they are willing to try in the hopes of winning it big. Seeing other people win and thinking ‘it could be me’ is on many people’s minds.
Other games are also available in a casino. Games like poker, blackjack, roulette, and others have regular followers. However, many people are not well-educated on the rules of the game and do not feel comfortable enough to play them whereas, slot machines are simple to play and one can be inconspicuous if they are playing and lose.
Gambling and slot machines are in casinos all over the world. Almost every country has casinos listed on the Internet. The majority of them are available for any class of people. Anyone with money to spend is welcomed to try their luck to win more. But, by far, the easiest gambling is on the slot machines and that is why people like to play slots.
There are so many websites that offer free online slots games at your convenience. You should search the Internet for online slots, because the fun is unstoppable.

Chargers Keep Cards Winless In NFL Preseason Play
No comments · Posted by Ross Everett in Recreation & Sports
Its been a rough NFL preseason for last years Superbowl runner up. The Arizona Cardinals have only scored one touchdown in two games as they’ve stumbled to a 0-2 record. Things didn’t get any better on Saturday night, as the visiting San Diego Chargers added to their offensive woes en route to a 17-6 victory.
The Chargers cornerbacks performed admirably against Arizona, and Antonio Cromartie–who intercepted Kurt Warner in the endzone to perpetuate the Cardinals scoring futility”said that’s been a focus for the team during the preseason:
“That’s one of our biggest focuses. Do whatever you’ve got to to keep them out of the end zone. We did that.”
Despite the teams lack of offensive productivity Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt wasnt particularly concerned:
“I’m disappointed that we haven’t had more touchdowns, obviously but I will say this, we haven’t game planned in the red zone. A lot of times when we game plan in the red zone we’re one of the best teams in the NFL, because we put our players in a position to best give them a chance to win.’
QB Warner sounded a similar tone:
“It is disappointing because we had some opportunities we didn’t capitalize on like we wanted to but there is going to be a lot of stuff we can learn from tonight. We will get better and be all right in a couple of weeks.”
The Chargers offense hasnt lit up the scoreboard either, and during this game suffered a lot of breakdowns in pass protection. San Diego coach Norv Turner indicated that this was an area of concern:
“The things we take a lot of pride in around here. Tonight our guys saw we have some work to do.”
LaDanian Tomlinson said that he’s benefited from preseason play:
“I think it was just good to get in there and start to get a rhythm.
Arizona will host Green Bay on Friday night, while San Diego will continue their NFL preseason slate in Atlanta as they play the Falcons at the Georgia Dome on Saturday night. The Cardinals will open the NFL regular season on Sunday, September 13 as they host the San Francisco 49ers while the Chargers will start the 2009 campaign on Monday, September 14th as they travel to Oakland for a game against the Raiders.

Alexis Arguello: Remembering A Champion
No comments · Posted by Ross Everett in Recreation & Sports
Nicaraguan boxing legend Alexis Arguello was found dead of an apparent suicide in his home in early July. At the time of his death, he served as mayor of Nicaragua’s capital city.
Known for his class outside the ring as much for his tenacity inside the ring, hes best known to casual fight fans for his epic war in’82 with Aaron The Hawk Pryor when he moved up in weight after dominating at lighter weight classes. Ring Magazine not only named it Fight of the Year, but later would dub it Fight of the Decade. Promoter Bob Arum offered these thoughts on Pryor/Arguello:
“It was a brutal, brutal fight. That was something I will never, ever forget as long as I live. That was one of the most memorable fights I ever did.”
While the first Pryor fight may have brought him the most mainstream notoriety, boxing cognoscenti are aware that Arguello is arguably the best lightweight and junior lightweight in the history of the sport. Arguello never lost a fight at-0 pounds and would end his career with an astounding 82-8 record with 65 knockouts and championships in three different weight classes. At the time, he was only the sixth man in boxing history to hold title belts at three different weights.
Ironically, Arguellos career didn’t get off to a good start and he lost his debut in’68 via first round TKO. After that, he seldom lost again and would go on to be respected as one of the best pound for pound fighters of his day. He was at his best against his toughest adversaries including Ray Mancini, Bobby Chacon and Ruben Olivares. Bob Arum remembered him not only as a great fighter, but as a great man:
“Not only was he one of the greatest fighters I’ve ever seen, he was the most intelligent fighter. He was a ring tactician. Every move was thought out. And he was a wonderful, wonderful person.”
The articulate, intelligent Arguello was frequently quoted on the fight game and how champions should conduct themselves. Here, he speaks of his attitude toward his opponents:
“Of course after the fight you want to make sure that you’re okay and so is the other guy, its a brotherhood in there, so you want to make sure everyone is okay after the war is over.”
Arguello didn’t fight for his first title until he’d had 58 fights, and would frequently admonish boxers who didn’t show the same respect for the sport or their status as champion:
“When you won that title you should know now that you are representing a whole country or nation with your actions and you are now in a glass house or under a microscope and you better be ready to make your people proud.”
Arguello loved boxing and fought to protect it from those who would undermine its greatness:
“I respect boxing because it has given me so much and thats why I will never allow anyone to mistreat the sport of boxing if I can help it.”
While the modest, dignified Arguello would never say it himself, that was for from a one sided debt–he also gave immeasurably to the sport of boxing with his grace, intelligence, talent and toughness.

A Stellar Review Of The Film Saving Private Ryan
No comments · Posted by Zachary Dunn in Recreation & Sports
By reading into an article such as this one, I can venture a guess that you are looking to learn a good bit about the impressive film “Saving Private Ryan” and why you might care to watch it or learn more about it. The truth is, there are several different reasons that this film is so impressive, and most of them will be brought out in the upcoming paragraphs, along with a plot synopsis.
The first thing that you should know about this film is not who played who in the film, but rather who was sitting behind the camera when all of it was taking place. You see, knowing the director could tell you a lot about the film before you ever actually watch it, and the man behind this film was Steven Spielberg. This decorated director has had a hand in so many powerful and visually striking stories, that it is not surprising to learn that he was behind this film as well.
Just by watching the first thirty minutes of the film, you will see one of the most graphic, exciting and dramatic opening sequences that might have ever been captured on film. This is meant to be a soldier’s first hand view of D-Day. So you head from the boats to the other side of the beaches at Normandy along with several different soldiers and see the horror of war first hand.
When the action plateaus here, you are introduced to the main character of the piece, Captain John H. Miller and his company of men from all over the United States. They soon learn their new orders, which are to be the search and rescue unit to locate a paratrooper named Private James Ryan. However, this proves to be a rather difficult task in war torn Europe.
The reason they are trying to find Private Ryan is because his other three brothers in the Army had all been killed in action and the Army felt that he deserved to go home to his family. Needless to say, the company is divided on whether or not this is actually worth all the trouble to find Ryan, let alone watch him get a ticket home.
You are introduced to the life stories of several of the company’s men through the conversations that they have along the way. You begin to empathize with the events that happen, though you might have anyway. When they finally reach Ryan, he demands that they allow him to hold his post against the orders of the Army. He does not feel he deserves to go home, and his duty is undone. Together with Ryan’s new company, the paired companies make a heroic stand against the enemy and secure a key bridge to help the Allies.
This is a story that heavily reflects on the tragedy of war, the necessity of war, and the value of human life in the face of many different circumstances. This could likely be among the best war movies of all time, if not just included in some of the best movies of all time in general. Powerful performances by Tom Hanks (Captain Miller), Tom Sizemore (Sgt. Mike Horvath), and Matt Damon (Private Ryan) amongst so many others have helped to make this movie as impressive as it was.
So, when you are considering “Saving Private Ryan” there is a good bit to think about and understand. This article was meant to give you an introduction to the film and encourage you to see this 1998 classic if you haven’t already. This might make you thankful for the life you have, and respectful of the commitment some made to ensure that you had that life the way that you do.
Often such software is a lot more capable than software which has always been distributed freely. 80s romantic movies Octopus gets what he wants if Harry gets Spider-Man. Meanwhile, Will Ferrell (of SNL and Elf fame) makes a notable appearance as Dr.

Frank Capra’s Fantastic Film Its A Wonderful Life
No comments · Posted by Jeffrey Williamson in Recreation & Sports
Amongst all the great Christmas films ever made, Its a Wonderful Life is, without a doubt, the very best of them, and Frank Capra’s best film, period. All of his films portrayed his positive, life affirming philosophy towards the world, but this film defined that philosophy, and while it has had more than half a century’s worth of competition, it still stands as the greatest Christmas film ever made.
Yes, your inner child says “Not it’s not, that would be A Christmas Story, thank you very much!” and your inner cynic wants to laugh the whole thing off and say that Lethal Weapon is the greatest Christmas movie. Both wrong. This film is the best holiday film of all time for quite a number of reasons. Not How the Grinch Stole Christmas, not Die Hard, It’s a Wonderful Life.
The film manages to succeed on so many level because it is fearless. From the first act, it deals with subject matter and themes that are much darker than you expect to see in a holiday film. It is because of this courage, the bravery to start at such a low point, that the movie is so triumphantly positive. Heck, the movie’s second act starts with an attempted suicide!
Capra digs Stewart’s George Bailey a pit of sadness and pain, and watches as he learns to live again and climbs himself out. This is true positivity, true life affirming hope. Any old lifetime channel original movie can be positive and optimistic by simply never facing the hero or heroine with any challenges, but Capra knew that the only time optimism counts for anything is when the whole world is telling you to only see the worst side of things.
This film and Rocky rank as the all time great “Tears of Joy” films. If you’re not crying by the end, then sorry, but there’s probably something wrong with you, no offense. The film is simply so human, so humane, yet so honest, that it can’t help but dash any trace of negativity and pessimism you might have been feeling when it began.
Interestingly, the film was a flop on release. The director had always been a popular, money-making film maker, but for some reason, this one just didn’t grab the movie-going audience. Of course, the movie has since become one of the most successful of all time on video, DVD, second runs and, of course, cable, but at the time, it almost sank Capra’s career.
One more interesting point: They say that Stewart was Capra’s only choice for the role of George Bailey, but that’s not true! In fact, his “only choice” was Henry Fonda, but Stewart was a second choice, when push came to shove. We can say Fonda would have been great in the role, but it’s hard to imagine anyone but Stewart playing the character to such perfection.
There were actually several alternative endings written, and one or two filmed. If you’ve ever seen the Saturday Night Live episode where Bailey leads the whole town to Potter’s home to give him his comeuppance… That was actually based on an ending that was filmed by Capra! The one filmed for the movie probably wasn’t quite as goofy, but nevertheless, it WAS filmed!

Why The UFC Doesn’t Matter In Japan, And How They Can Fix It
No comments · Posted by Ross Everett in Recreation & Sports
The UFC is of borderline relevance in “The Land of the Rising Sun”. This isn’t to disparage the UFC, which has done a great job growing MMA in North America and parts of Europe. It’s an effort to put Dana White’s claims of Zuffa’s inevitable worldwide dominance into perspective.
Here are the three essential qualities for doing business in Japan, along with an analysis of what they mean to Zuffa’s efforts to build the UFC brand there:
Group Orientation/Collaboration: Japanese businessmen are notorious for sublimating their individual talents and personalities to the greater good of the group. For US businesses seeking to enter the market, a certain degree of partnership with existing Japanese firms is almost mandatory. The UFC worked with Germany s largest concert promoter (MLK) to enter that market with a fair degree of success. Even if the UFC didn’t want to go promote with one of the major players in Japanese fight sports, they’d be well advised to seek some sort of a partnership similar to their German initiative to help smooth their way.
Hierarchy: Japanese culture, including business, is almost ridiculously hierarchical. The societal reverence for age, experience and accomplishment in Japan is well known, and that’s often a difficult concept for American companies and businessmen to grasp. US businesses love mavericks and Horatio Alger stories. That accounts for much of the business medias fascination with Dana White and they’re quick to celebrate how a former aerobics instructor is now the most powerful man in MMA and the driving force of a billion dollar company. That storyline doesn’t play as well in Japan, however. One approach would be for White to take a back seat in UFC efforts to promote in Japan in favor of Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta and perhaps the widely respected former Nevada Athletic Commission director Marc Ratner.
Respect: Even among seedy elements like fight promoters–and even the underworld–respect in business dealings is essential in Japan. In a typical Japanese business deal, the first few meetings aren’t intended for any substantive decision making to take place. Instead, they’re used for evaluation of your professionalism or, as the Japanese like to put it, to determine your suitability for conducting business with. Considering that Dana Whites first introduction to the PRIDE staff and to the Japanese fight public was a press conference where he made the statement–more in reference to the proposed bouts between UFC and PRIDE fighters than anything else–”We’re going to kick your ass.” At that moment, PRIDE as a promotion died. The people that worked for PRIDE had no interest in helping White profit from the promotion. More significantly, he became little more than a clown to the Japanese public–like “Money From Government Grants” shill Mathew Lesko without the funny suit. To succeed in Japan, the UFC must realize that they’re not considered a major fight promotion in that country. They must understand that they’ve got to win over a skeptical public, but before that they have to win over a skeptical Japanese business community.
Dana White’s fanciful stories about Yakzua gangsters out of Quentin Tarantino movies might amuse his sycophants in the MMA media, but countless US companies including fight promotions have done business successfully and profitably in Japan. Properly promoting stars like Yoshihiro Akiyama will help, but the only way that Zuffa will be able to become a factor in the worlds #2 MMA market is to do what every other company has done to be successful there–learn how to understand the Japanese approach to doing business, and play by their rules.

Celtics Dump Cavs From NBA Playoffs
No comments · Posted by Ross Everett in Recreation & Sports
The Cleveland Cavaliers finished the NBA’s regular season with the league’s best record, and LeBron James won the Most Valuable Player award in the process. Despite this success, the Cavs will be watching the rest of the NBA playoffs on TV. Cleveland was eliminated by the Boston Celtics on Thursday night, losing game six by a final score of 94-85. Boston will now face the Orlando Magic for the right to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals.
The Cavs had won two of the first three games before the Celtics rebounded to win the last three en route to the series victory. In game six, Boston was priced as a -1′ point NBA betting favorite and easily covered the pointspread. The 179 combined points scored went well UNDER the posted total of 194. Heading into Game 6, Cleveland had taken the money in 8 of the last 12 games held at Boston’s TD BankNorth Garden although Boston had won 10 of 12 outright.
LeBron James didn’t go down without a fight, however, as he put up a ‘triple double’ consisting of 27 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists. Mo Williams added 22 points, but the Cavs received little production from the rest of the roster. For the game, the Celtics’ bench outscored their Cleveland counterparts 24-13.
Kevin Garnett led the Celtics with 22 points and 12 rebounds, and afterward credited his team’s experience:
“Winning is gratifying. You’re playing the best team in basketball; the challenge is there; you don’t have to dress it up. One thing we don’t lack is confidence. We’re a veteran team and we understand when it’s time to lock in as a group. I think we did just that. I think the experience is taking over.”
LeBron, meanwhile, was in a state of disbelief:
“The fact that it’s over right now is definitely a surprise to me. A friend of mine told me, ‘I guess you’ve got to go through a lot of nightmares before you realize your dream.’ That’s what’s going on for me individually right now.”
There’s been much speculation about the future of the reigning MVP-LeBron is eligible to opt out of his contract this summer and there’s no shortage of teams that would love to have him. For now, he’s keeping his cards close to the vest:
“I want to win. That’s my only thing, my only concern. I’ve always prided myself — it’s all about winning for me and I think the Cavs are committed to doing that. But at the same time, I’ve given myself options to this point. Me and my team, we have a game plan that we’ll execute and we’ll see where we’re at.”
The Celtics will now face the Orlando Magic, who have rampaged through the first two rounds of the playoffs. Orlando’s conference semifinal sweep of the Atlanta Hawks was the most dominating 4 game series victory in NBA history, with an average per game margin of victory of 25.2 points.
