The Significance Of Rituals In A Buddhists Funeral
No comments · Posted by Shiela Wong in Internet Business
Buddhism is one of the most popular religions practised extensively across the world. The main principles of the religion have been derived from the teachings of Buddha. Buddhism involves quest for the Ultimate Truth and also a sense of compassion and genuine love for every living being.
These main tenets of Buddhism are reflected in the rites practised in a Buddhist funeral. There are certain compulsory rituals that need to be adhered to during the funeral of a dead person. These rites are aimed at ensuring that the deceased is raised to a higher stage. Prayers are offered invoking the goodness of the deceased person and hopes are made for a blissful life after death for the departed.
A traditional ablution of the body marks the start of the Buddhist funeral rites. Monks are invited to read out from religious scriptures, which are believed to give the deceased the correct guidance to achieve spiritual freedom. The monks read out those sermons of Lord Buddha that talk about the significance of practising compassion and kindness. The body is meanwhile prepared for the final rituals. The deceased is usually provided with some coins put in his casket by the family members. This is for helping the dead person to pay and wade across the River of Three Hells.
The casket is then placed before the altar in the house for friends and relatives to pay their respects. Attendees are expected to pray for the deceased and the family and relatives give their condolences. Priests who perform the rituals continue to recite the appropriate sutras. After the chanting is over, people present at the ceremony bow at the altar. As the visitors begin leaving, the family members present a gift to each other to show gratitude for sharing their sorrow.
After these rituals are done, the deceased may then be either buried or cremated in accordance with the beliefs of the family. These rituals are meant to allow the family to overcome their sorrow by offering prayers that will elevate the dead to a higher pedestal of enlightenment and knowledge.
